How Do Instruments Create Sound?

A musical instrument may look simple from the outside, but producing a note always involves vibration. Something has to move back and forth rapidly enough to create sound waves in the surrounding air. What vibrates depends on the instrument: it might be a string, a column of air, a stretched surface or another part designed to resonate.

Musicians control those vibrations in different ways. They may blow, pluck, bow, strike, shake or press keys, and small changes in technique can affect pitch, volume and tone. This is one reason instruments can sound so different even when they are playing exactly the same note.

From Rhythm to Melody

Instruments can play different roles when musicians perform together. Some are especially effective at creating a steady beat or rhythmic pattern, while others often carry a melody. Many can do much more than one job, and the combination of contrasting sounds is an important part of what gives a band, orchestra or other musical group its character.
