So Many Jobs, So Many Skills

People choose from an enormous variety of professions, and every job involves its own combination of knowledge, skills and responsibilities. Some people design things, some work with their hands, some care for others, while others entertain, investigate or travel as part of their work. Learning the English names of professions is therefore also a way to discover what people do in everyday life.

This picture crossword introduces six very different occupations. Instead of reading definitions, players first have to study the illustrations and work out which profession each character represents. Clothing, tools and the surrounding scene can all provide useful clues before the spelling challenge begins.

Tools Can Tell a Story

Many professions can be recognized by the equipment associated with them. Specialized tools may help someone work safely, perform a precise task or communicate with other people. Uniforms and protective clothing can provide additional clues, although what somebody wears at work can vary considerably from one workplace to another.

Looking beyond the obvious details makes the pictures more interesting. What is the person doing? Where might they be working? What skills would they need? Asking these questions encourages children to connect a profession with actions, objects and places rather than simply memorizing an isolated English word.

Players need to observe each scene, identify the job, recall its English name and spell it correctly in the crossword.
